West Midlands
The West Midlands region was once the centre of a vast and complicated canal system, but is now the hub of an equally complicated motorway network. This is one of the most important industrial and manufacturing regions and despite Charles Dickens’ description of ‘an industrialised realisation of hell’, the so called Black Country, Birmingham and Coventry have much to offer.
Birmingham is the home of the renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Just five miles south west of Coventry stands the glorious massive sandstone ruin of Kenilworth Castle built by Geoffrey de Clinton, chamberlain to Henry I in 1125 and later owned by John of Gaunt.
