money saving tips

  • This month's top tips are:

    1. A typical PC left running for 24 hours will use £70 of electricity over a year - if you only use it for 2 hours a day you could save almost £60 each year by turning it off.
    2. If you're in digs turn your thermostat down by just 1 degree to save yourself 10% on your annual bill.
    3. If there’s any food left over when you eat out, don’t be embarrassed to ask for a box and take it away. That could be next day’s lunch taken care of.
    4. If you're going to the cinema go on a Wednesday. Find a friend who has an orange phone and text 'FILM' to 241. You'll get a free ticket to use that day - 2 for 1!

Top Tip:

Supermarket own brands are up to 25% cheaper. Own brand items are often much cheaper and their quality can sometimes be just as good as items with well-known names. With a bit of trial and error you could find a range of own label items that you’re happy with, saving you loads in the long run.

Devilish detail...

Avoid the financial pitfalls by understanding the banking catches hidden in all those tempting offers.

Heres a few things to look out for:

      1. A bank account that charges you high overdraft fees. An overdraft isn't always the best way to boost your cashflow. There are many other options that can be cheaper. Often students fall into the trap of using expensive overdrafts because they are quick and easy to set up. Think about all your options before going overdrawn.
      2. Top-up loans are a good way to provide additional income once your student loan has been used up on fees but read the detail carefully. Loans where you start accruing interest form day one should be avoided. Look for loans where the government pay the interest for you whilst you are studying. There are a few about.
      3. Credit cards with cash back offers that quickly turn into high rate cards. Be aware of the terms once the cash back offer has ended. It may not be worth it in the long run.

Did you know?

It's shocking but true that:

  1. The average debt held by a student when they leave university is now at an all time high of £20K
  2. The national average credit card bill is £1,385. One in ten only make minimum payments. A £5k balance could take up to 83 years to pay off using just minimum payments. Be warned  - pay off more when you can.
